I like GIMP. I use it to edit PNG files with transparency, and I'm too lazy to download Photoshop again, since I formatted my computer's hard disk.
However you made some mistakes in your post:
This is an alternative software to Adobe Photoshop ONLY (even if it has less features). It's not an alternative to Flash, Dreamweaver, After Effects, etc... Fixed the title.
By the way this program is already included in most Linux distributions, and we cannot see your signature.

GIMP is very good, especially for an open source alternative.
Only thing I have against it is that the interface is split up into different Windows, but it's easy to get used to.
